Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean
If you’re running a Class 100 cleanroom, you already know the nightmare of particulate shedding. One tiny flake from a cheap heating element and your silicon wafers or medical implants are trash. It’s frustrating. That’s why we stopped messing around with standard resistive heaters that outgas or peel. Instead, we use high-purity quartz infrared lamps and gold-coated reflectors. Why the quartz? We use synthetic fused quartz for the envelope because it’s a beast. It handles extreme thermal shock without breaking a sweat—and more importantly, it doesn’t turn into dust when things get hot. Then there’s the gold reflector. It’s not about looking fancy. It’s about efficiency. It bounces nearly 98% of that infrared radiation right back at your workpiece. This means less heat leaks into the machine chassis, which keeps your room temperature stable. It just works better. Getting the specs right Here’s the thing: you’ve got to balance your voltage and wattage against how fast you need to heat up. A high-wattage, short-wave lamp will hit your target temperature in a blink. But be careful—it puts a massive load on your power supply. And if you’re using a long tube, keep an eye on your voltage drop. I always suggest high-grade connectors. Why? Because arcing is a disaster in a vacuum or a clean environment. It creates metallic micro-particles that you absolutely do not want in your process. A few things to watch out for Gold reflectors are amazing for heat, but they’re soft. If your maintenance team goes in there with abrasive pads to scrub them, they’ll scratch the coating and your efficiency will tank. Stick to non-linting wipes and isopropyl alcohol. Simple. Also, remember that concentrated IR heat is intense. If your material has a low melting point, you can’t just “set it and forget it.” You’ll need a PID controller with a fast sampling rate to stop the temperature from overshooting. Without that precision, you might end up scorching your substrate, even if the room is perfectly clean.
